Isles of Shoals Swim Qualifications

Preparing for a 7-mile ocean swim in 60°F (15.5°C) water or below is a significant undertaking. 6.2 miles is marathon swimming. At this distance and temperature, qualifications are not just about speed, but about cold-water endurance and safety. Swimmers must articulate their swimming backgrounds as part of the acceptance process for registration in the Isles of Shoals Swim.

Endurance Requirements

  • Distance Proficiency: Can comfortably complete 10k (6.2 miles) in a pool or calm open water. Have completed at least one 2-3 hour continuous swim in the past year.

  • Pace Standard: Able to maintain a pace of at least 1 mile per 35 minutes.

Cold Water Acclimatization/Swim Experience

  • The "60-Minute Rule":  Have experience swimming for at least 60–90 minutes in water 60°F or below without showing signs of moderate hypothermia.

  • Cold Shock Management: Have trained to control the "gasp reflex" upon entry.

  • Swim Conditions Experience: Demonstrated experience with ocean swimming preferred (experience in navigating winds, currents, waves, etc.).

Logistics

  • Swimmer Support: Swimmers must bring crewmember(s) to work with boat captain/crew to support the swim.

  • Feeding Protocol: Solo swimmers must have a practiced "feeding" plan (liquid nutrition/gels) that can be executed every 30–45 minutes without touching the support boat.
